What are Crowns?

Crowns are “covers” or shells that are installed on our real teeth to protect and shield compromised teeth. Porcelain and Zirconia are materials that have functionalities for different areas of the mouth. Porcelain matches the look and feel of our natural teeth in its sparkling, translucent color and is thus used more in the front of the bite that is more visible, whereas Zirconia is a more durable and strong material and is preferentially used deeper in the bite, for instance, as a shield on our chewing teeth such as our molars. Either way, crowns are one of the most popular restorative and cosmetic dentistry tools as they can be customized to match the shape and color of our natural teeth and are long-lasting restorations.

What’s the
first step?

The first step towards getting Porcelain and Zirconia Crowns in Miami at Drill Dental Bar is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Alex Gruenberg or one of our highly trained dentists. During the appointment, he will discuss your dental and overall medical history, your aesthetic and functional goals and concerns, and work to manage your expectations by detailing the process and its associated risks and benefits. He will conduct an extensive exam of your teeth, focusing on your target teeth, and determine if you are an ideal candidate for a crown. He will then discuss if a Porcelain or Zirconia crown will be best for you.

Once you and your dentist decide, they will draft a treatment plan, which our patient coordinator will use to schedule your procedure. Finally, a technician will take X-rays and impressions of your teeth to collect the detailed contour of your teeth for customizing your crown.

What to Expect From a Crown Treatment

On the day of your crown appointment in Miami, our friendly staff will welcome you and get you settled in the procedure room. They will go over your treatment plan and mark the target tooth.

After getting x-rays, you will be administered local anesthesia. Then, your lips will be carefully retreated with a lip retractor to expose your bite. The target tooth will then be prepared for the molding of the permanent crown. In some cases, that might mean shaving off damaged, infected, and decayed parts of the tooth or, in other cases, just a gentle cleaning.

Once your tooth is ready for its “shell” or crown, a molding gel will be poured into a bite and put in your mouth. Once that hardens, it will be sent off to the lab for the permanent crown to be made, and meanwhile, a temporary crown will be placed.

You will then return to the office in a few weeks to get the permanent crown placed. The dentist will adjust your bite using ink paper to make sure you don’t have unintended pressure and pain from the new crown.

Each appointment usually lasts anywhere from thirty minutes to one hour. You might have to return a few times to adjust your crown.

Crowns Recovery

The first few days after a crown placement might be sensitive for some patients. We recommend against consuming extremely hot and cold foods to minimize reactions to temperature sensitivity. We also recommend maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing the biting and chewing of hard objects, especially with the crown.

Flossing around the new crown is important to ensure that the gums are accessible and that you can return to the office in case any adjustments need to be made.
