What is a Root Canal?

Also referred to as Endodontic Treatment, a root canal is a procedure performed with specialized tools to cure a severely cracked, decayed, or injured tooth that requires more attention than a standard deep clean.

Inside of each of your teeth is a soft tissue called “pulp” that extends down to the root, which itself contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. When the inside pulp has become inflamed or infected, it can begin to rot the root, creating a lot of pain and essentially killing your tooth.

Although root canals do have a reputation for being painful, thanks to modern-day techniques and the use of anesthesia, endodontic treatment is nothing to be concerned about experiencing.

What are the signs that I need a Root Canal?

If you are experiencing one or a combination of any of the following symptoms, there is the possibility you may require endodontic surgery.

Gum Inflammation: If you have tender, swollen gums or have a “pimple-like” bump in them, these are signs of a possible tooth infection. There may be other treatments to cure the inflammation, but you should certainly schedule an appointment to figure out how to fix it.

Dental Discoloration: If your tooth has significantly changed color, particularly darker than the surrounding teeth, you may be experiencing nerve damage.

Sensitivity to Temperature: Although many things can make your teeth sensitive (i.e. smoking, teeth whitening, poor brushing habits, or receding gums), if you are experiencing prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures when you touch, chew, or put pressure on the tooth, you may need a root canal.

Severe Tooth Pain: If you feel any pain in your mouth (teeth, gums, or tongue), these may be signs of oral health issues. However, if you have any sharp tooth pain that comes suddenly, even without eating or drinking anything, this may be a sign of a tooth infection or dead tooth.

Chipped/ Cracked Tooth: Sometimes after eating hard foods, receiving a sport or accident injury, or even excessively grinding your teeth, you can crack or chip a tooth. When this happens, the nerves beneath the surface can be exposed and lead to an infection.

What should I expect on the Day of My Root Canal?

On the day of your procedure, a local anesthetic will be applied to the infected tooth and surrounding area. Then, we will place a small, protective sheet over the area to isolate the tooth from the rest of your mouth as well as keep it clean and saliva-free. During the treatment, all of the infected pulp and nerves located in the root are removed. The pulp chamber and root area are then cleaned and medicated. Once this has been completed, the empty area will be filled and sealed.

Depending on the location of the tooth, you may require a dental crown or another restorative treatment to strengthen and protect the tooth.
