  1. Examine the tooth

We assess the cause of symptoms and whether root canal treatment is appropriate.

  2. Clean and seal the canals

The area is numbed and the canals are treated. Some cases take more than one visit.

  3. Protect the tooth between visits

A temporary filling may be placed. Avoid chewing hard or sticky foods on that tooth.

  4. Complete the restoration

Your dentist decides whether a crown or another restoration is needed. Keep this appointment even if the pain has stopped.

About the procedure

Root canal treatment removes inflamed or infected tissue from inside a tooth. The canals are cleaned, filled, and sealed. The tooth then needs a final restoration to protect it.
